It's been twelve years since we saw Kong on the big screen and now we are getting hyped for a remake that might just rock the Earth.
So, what do I think of this entry to the Legendary Kaiju Cinematic Universe?
Well for one, the plot is much faster than that of Godzilla's. As we've read in articles, we don't have have to wait an hour before going into Skull Island. I personally think around 20-25 minutes before we reach the island. From there, everything becomes very fast paced though I do admit that much of the action on the island is more or less filler but still enjoyable with a 70's song or two.
So what about the cast? Surely with a more recognizable roster such as Samuel Jackson and John Goodman, this would be beneficial to the movie. In ways, yes. They do have a bunch of Easter eggs and nods straight down to dialogue.
The commercials do reveal something: Kong was actually a coincidence, not the creature Monarch was looking for. John Goodman's character founded Monarch after his ship and most of his crew were attacked by a passing Godzilla. Skull Island, being surrounded by a thunderhead, was a most likely location (if you were dropped by nukes, wouldn't you find someplace to hide). Sadly, Goodman's character and arc is finished during the venture in the Mass Grave and so Jackson's character takes the revenge plot, having lost most of his men by Kong after surviving Vietnam.
Outside of Kong, the Skull Crawlers, a squid that Kong eats, a spider (I just call it Kumonga) and a pterosaur-like creature with sawfish head, all the other creatures are props.
So what's the verdict? Is it worth me going to a late night showing after work, risking a little amount of sleep as I write this blog post?
Get your ass over to the nearest theater and buy a ticket. And be prepared for the next hype of a battle between the dinosaur, the bird, the moth, and a three-headed dragon.
